Slate Tile

What is Slate Tile?

Slate is a fine-grained, foliated, homogeneous metamorphic rock derived from an original shale-type sedimentary rock composed of clay or volcanic ash through low-grade regional metamorphism. The result is a foliated rock in which the foliation may not correspond to the original  layering. When expertly “cut” by striking with a specialized tool in the quarry, many slates will form smooth flat sheets of stone which have long been used for roofing and floor tiles and other purposes. A variety of slate mainly composed of a gray tone, however there are variations of green, purple, red, black, brown, beige, tan, orange, and rust colors. Slate flooring is gauged from the bottom of tile for a more even surface, however there are un-gauged tile choices available for a desired uneven surface variation. Slate tile sizes for flooring are available in 12 x 12 or 16 x 16. With slate there is no tile that is alike. Slate explodes with variation, color, and character.
