What is Sisal?

The sisal plant grows in abundance in  the nation of  Tanzania.  Even in drought weather conditions the sisal plant seems to grow well. This is important to the Tanga region, since drought is a problem.   The sisal plant is harvested by hand where the lower  leaves are cut away with a flexible knife, standing 45 degrees from the bole of the plant. The leaves are then transported to a central factory where the leaves are decorticated  to extract the cortex of ribbon fibers that run the length of the leaves.  The extracted fibers  are washed, sun dried, brushed to separate and align the individual strands of fiber, graded and packed into bales.  The tough sisal fiber is then ready to be extruded into a durable woven carpet.

Sisal Carpet Benefits: Installation, Area Rugs and Runners

Houston, TX interior decorators have been specifying the natural fiber sisal material for decades. The sisal material is stylish, yet durable material. Sisal has many benefits such as its naturally hypoallergenic, chemical free, no oil or petroleum, will not inhibit bacteria or dust mites, and will not conduct static electricity. The indoor air quality is not compromised by gas or oil based emitting fumes that typical carpets fibers may have.

Sisal Carpet is sold in a broadloom roll attached to a latex backing.  The size of the roll is typically 13 foot 2 inches wide.
